900words is open source

Money shouldn’t stand in the way of learning. You can learn with the official app, or you can build 900words yourself and use the whole curriculum for free, for your own learning. This page explains what is open, what is protected, and why.

The source code is not public yet.

We are preparing the public repository now. It will be linked right here as soon as it is ready. Until then, this page describes how it will work.

three ways to learn

Pay for the easy path, or build your own

The official app

Two games a day, free

Download 900words and play two games every day without paying. It is enough to learn steadily, and to find out whether learning with Casey works for you.

The official app, unlimited

$0.99 a month, or $10.99 once

Play as many games a day as you like. You get a ready-made, tested app with updates and support, and you pay for the curriculum work and the solo development behind it. Prices are in US dollars; the App Store shows yours.

Build it yourself

Free, with your own tools

Take the source code, build the app yourself, and play without limits for your own learning at no cost. You set it up, keep it updated and support yourself.

Paying is the easy path, not the only path. Either way, you can learn.

what is open

Three parts, three sets of rules

“Open source” should never be a vague label, so here is exactly what each part of 900words allows.

PartLicenceWhat you may do
The app’s codeMozilla Public License 2.0Read it, change it, fork it, and use it commercially. Changes you distribute to MPL files stay open.
The curriculum: every city’s words, boards, clues, sentences, lessons and recordings900words Curriculum Personal Use LicenceUse it for your own learning, in your own build, as long as you like. Not for sharing, public copies, other apps or resale.
The 900words name, logo, icon and lookReservedNot covered by any of the licences above. A fork can say “Built using the open-source 900words project”, under its own name.

The full licence texts will be published with the repository. The curriculum licence is being reviewed by a lawyer before release.

build it yourself

What the self-build route means

why

The knowledge is not locked behind money

900words is made by one person, Kristoffer. The official app pays for the curriculum, the recordings and the time it takes to keep everything working. But a learner who cannot pay should still be able to learn, and a developer who wants to see how it works, or make it better, should be able to. So the code is open, two games a day are free for everyone, and the whole curriculum is free for anyone who builds the app for their own learning.
